I was one of the first tenants to move into 87 Attorney Street in 2001 and stayed until July 2010. When I first moved in everything was great. The building was brand new and it is a great location.
It's close to everything and there are literally hundreds of restaurants within a 5 minute walk. It's 5-6 minutes walk to the F train station at Essex street.
The apartments are nice, with sliding doors that open to quaint balconies (the perfect place to sip a cup of coffee in the morning). There's laundry in the building and a nice garden in the back. There's an elevator.
Unfortunately I think all 1 bedroom apartments have been converted into 2-bedroom apartments in order to maximize revenue for the landlord Dr. Morris Platt. The duplexes on the top floor have been converted into 3 bedroom apartments - they were initially 1.5 bedroom apartments. It's history repeating itself - the lower east side is full of tenement buildings.
To the south of 87-89 Attorney Street sits an abandoned building, to the north is an empty lot and another empty building. The empty lot was a synagogue that burned down in the 80's but was never demolished. The owners wanted to see it built up again but were never able to raise the funds. On the corner of the block is a very interesting walkup building with solar panels and other green features. This building is owned by an architect and his family.
